Description
Just down the road from here, east of Aspen, the icy road ends not permanently, but for the winter when it's blocked to auto and truck traffic. That's because it soon climbs high over the Rockies across Independence Pass, 14,000 feet up in spots, on its way to the old mining town of Leadville. Aspen, too, was once a mining camp, not a famous ski resort and hangout for both Colorado's elite and its counterculture.
