Description
These are longhorn cattle, and they ARE in Texas. But they are not traditional Texas longhorns. They are Ankole-Watusi, also known as Ankole longhorns, at the Houston Zoo. Originally native to Africa, these cattle have distinctive horns that can reach up to 8 feet from tip to tip. The horns are used for defense and cooling via their blood vesseled honeycombs. Ankole-Watusis weigh from 900 to 1,600 pounds. (NOTE TO RESEARCHERS: The camera gps readings on this image place the photograph in Hawaii! That is incorrect. The photo was taken in Houston.)
